NEW YORK, 27 January 2011:The January sale of Important and Old Master Paintings & Sculpture realized many exceptional records, including 15 records for artists at auction. The sale was led by the Renaissance master Titian and his masterpiece A Sacra Conversazione: The Madonna and Child with Saints Luke and Catherine of Alexandria, which sold for US$16.9 million to a European private collector - breaking a 20-year record for the artist at auction.
Property of the Beaverbrook Foundation was led by Claude-Joseph Vernet’s A Grand View of the Sea Shore Enriched with Buildings, Shipping and Figures, intrigued collectors and its appeal resulted in US$7,026,500 above a high estimate of US$2 million, far surpassing the previous artist record of US$3.8 million. The morning session set auction records for works by iconic artists Joachim Wtewael and Gerrit Dou. Wtewael’s oil on copper work Adam and Eve achieved US$6,242,500, more than five times its pre-sale high estimate of US$1.2 million, bringing a combined total of US$90.6 Million for Old Master Paintings and Sculpture sold at Sotheby’s New York.
