The sale of important French Furniture, Sculptures and Works of Art which will be held at Sotheby's Paris on April 6th, brings together an exceptional set of approximately 230 precious pieces of furniture and objects coming from different European collections. Notable lots include a rare Italian Renaissance bronze sculpture as well as a group of 18th and 19th Century French terracottas.
High expectations have been generated around the sale of an exceptionally rare Louis XVI French secretaire, which is likely to be the most important piece to be sold at this auction. This piece, a highly important giltbronze, Sèvres porcelain, satinwood, sycamore and amaranth marquetry secrétaire en cabinet was realized by A. Weisweiler and comes previously from the collection of the late Baron Gustave de Rothschild. This secrétaire is made up of a wide variety of ébénisterie and menuiserie pieces which illustrate the 18th Century.
Other important masterpieces for this auction include a pair of Beauvais's tapestries as well as some notable examples of Sèvres porcelain pieces of prestigious provenance such as the King of Denmark and Madame du Barry.
A hanger from the second half of the 18th Century, destined to the entrance of an important mansion or a public building is extraordinary by its quality and the outstanding execution of its naturalistic details.
The section of European Works of Art and Sculpture contains an important Renaissance alabaster figure of a Virgin and Child attributed to Guillaume Regnault (active between 1502-1534), nephew and scholar of the famous French sculptor Michel Colombe (1430-1512). Dating from circa 1510-1520, the figure is outstanding for its fine modeling of drapery and faces. Another important piece in the sale is a Florentine, 17th century Pacing bronze horse, after a model by Giambologna, an exceptional fresh and crisp cast of high quality. A fine ensemble of French 18th and 19th century terracottas, some of them from the reputed collection of Marius Paulme (1929) adds to the variety of pieces in the sale.
