Since holding the inaugural international Contemporary Turkish Art auction in 2009, Sotheby's has achieved outstanding results with its sales in this category. The forthcoming Contemporary Turkish Art sale to be held in London on April 7, 2011 features 102 lots comprising works by leading modern and contemporary Turkish artists, in addition to works by younger talent from the region.
The sale includes paintings, sculptures, photographs and works on paper, including a masterpiece from the internationally acclaimed artist Burhan Dogancay's Ribbons Series, Whispering Wall II (1985), an epic work by Ansen Atilla from his Civilizations Series, Guns of War, a bronze sculpture by Yasam Sasmazer, and an Arture from Yuksel Arslan's L'homme II Series. Another highlight from the sale is 1879 by the hyperrealist artist Taner Ceylan from his Lost Painting Series; an artist whose works in the previous sales attracted tremendous interest from around the world.
The sale also features a special section devoted to an exceptional group of paintings by the Turkish modern art master Mubin Orhon, from the collection of Daniel Gervis. These four works, never before seen on the market, were purchased directly from the artist by Gervis and stayed in the same collection for almost 50 years. They are among the rarest from the artist's oeuvre, only paralleled in quality with the Mubin Orhon paintings in the Sir Robert and Lady Lisa Sainsbury Collection housed in Norwich, England.
