Responding to the ever-growing demand for innovative and quality works from the region, Sotheby’s auction of Contemporary Art / Arab & Iranian features a diverse group of paintings and sculptures representing the modern masters from private collections as well as contemporary works fresh to the market.
Sotheby’s commitment to working with charitable causes is evident in a selection of works offered to benefit Kids Company, a charity founded in 1996 by Camila Batmanghelidjh to provide support to vulnerable inner-city children. Works by ten contemporary Iranian artists will be sold, with contributions from other well-known artists such as Ghasem Hajizadeh and Reza Derakshani.
Following the return of Iraq to the international stage at the Venice Biennale earlier this year, Sotheby’s is proud to present a selection of seven paintings by Iraqi modern masters who in the 1970s were notably active in the art world, creating excitement across the Arab world and beyond. Highlighting the Iraqi Art component is Jawad Salim, a decisive figure in the Iraqi movement; his capacity to create remarkable sculptures and paintings inevitably led to his impact on the history of Iraqi art.
A particular highlight is the appearance of Scratching on Things I Could Disavow Parts 2 & 3 by Walid Raad, whose work focuses on researching, documenting and preserving the contemporary history of Lebanon. This sale marks Raad’s first presence at any auction house since his work was sold in 2006 by Sotheby’s in order to raise funds for the Whitechapel Gallery, London.
