The recent sale at Sotheby's of Alma-Tadema's painting The Finding of Moses for almost $36million demonstrates the continuing demand for Victorian paintings of the highest quality. With this in mind we are delighted to present a carefully selected sale of pictures almost entirely sourced from private collections. Among these paintings, drawings and watercolours are fourteen Masterpieces, each one a rare or exceptional painting by its creator. Some pictures will be familiar, such as Burne-Jones' powerful portrait of his wife Georgiana and John Everett Millais' Christmas Eve which have extensive and prestigious exhibition histories, whilst others have rarely been seen in public like John Melhuish Strudwick's beautiful In the Golden Days and James Tissot's elegant and beguiling portrait of his favourite muse, A Winter's Walk. The sale also includes fine examples by the perennially popular Charles Spencelayh, John Atkinson Grimshaw, Dame Laura Knight and a collection of watercolours by Archibald Thorburn. We hope that you can join us at the presale exhibition and enjoy viewing the catalogue online.
