This collection has been assembled over the last 30 years by a collector who harbours an abiding passion for Venice. This love is reflected in the works in this sale, which encompass furniture, decorative and fine arts. The icon of this group is the superb console table shown opposite, which shows Narcissus admiring his reflection in a pool of water. The table is joined by an array of carved giltwood mirrors - including the example with faux marble cabochons shown above - that echo the grandeur of the Palaces of the Grand Canal.
The Old Master paintings in this sale show the breadth and variety of painting in 18th-century Venice: Antonio Balestras magnificent canvases showing Flora and Fortune (overleaf) are undoubtedly the highlights. They are impressive not just in scale but also for their provenance: they were commissioned from the artist by the Zenobio family as part of a decorative scheme and remained hanging in their palazzo in Venice until the late 20th century.
