Once again, Sotheby's Photographs sale is held in Paris in November, coinciding with Paris Photo, the leading European photography fair.
Sotheby's offers an important group of 28 vintage prints: Edward Weston & Tina Modotti, The Mexican Years: 1923-26 from the collection of Anita Brenner. Brenner, an American-Mexican writer, was working on a catalogue of Mexican decorative art, when she met Weston and Modotti, and subsequently commissioned them to illustrate the project. When Brenner's book, Idols and Altars, was published in 1929, it included 70 photographs by Weston. Most of the prints included in this sale are part of this series; however, there are also further masterpieces from the Mexican years of Weston and Modotti, which they gave to Anita Brenner. For example, this auction will see a rare appearance of Weston's iconic Nudes of Anita Brenner, taken in November 1925, which he viewed as his finest studies in the genre.
