This July's Day Sale of Old Master and British Paintings includes two works de-accessioned from the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico: an important late landscape by Paul Bril and a large view of the Valkhof at Nijmegen by Jan van Goyen. Complimenting these works is a rare and newly discoveredAllegory of Vanity by Adriaen Pietersz. Van de Venne, along with an unusually large number of other allegorical subjects by, among others, Jan Brueghel the Younger and his nephew Jan van Kessel.
The Italian paintings section is highlighted by a magnificent and highly accomplished period copy of Caravaggio's great depiction of the young John the Baptist, a gruelling depiction of the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew by Andrea Vaccaro and a sublime pair of Still lifes with musical instruments by Cristoforo Munari.
Amongst the best of the British paintings is an outstanding early work by Sir Henry Edwin Landseer,Portrait of an Arab Mare with her foal, a wonderfully atmospheric sketch of Dedham Vale by John Constable and an imposing view of the Greenland Trader LION on the Mersey in a fresh breeze by Robert Salmon.
