The Music section boasts 5 autograph manuscripts by Beethoven (lots 6 & 7), Mozart (51 & 53) & Rossini (74) that were all bought in Vienna in the 1840s and never offered publicly before. There is also a collection of autographs by 27 contemporary British. composers. Such manuscripts usually remain with the composers or their publishers, and Sotheby's is grateful to both for permission to sell and illustrate them. This may well be a final as well as a first opportunity: nearly all composers now write their works using computers, where pen and pencil are dispensed with entirely. These manuscripts have been donated by the composers in support of the Heslington Foundation's work on behalf of living composers.
