Sotheby's Important 20th Century Design auction on December 16th will present a curated collection of masterworks dating from the Arts and Crafts period through the 1970s. This season Sotheby's is honored to present the Charles M. Pratt Desk and Chair by Greene & Greene, the most important work created by the architects and an icon of American furniture. The Desk and Chair is from the Pratt House, one of the last of Charles and Henry Greene's "Ultimate Bungalows" that made them among the most important architects of the 20th century. Additional highlights from the American Arts and Crafts movement include other iconic designs by Greene & Greene from the Robert R. Blacker House, Gustav Stickley, Charles Rohlfs, Dirk Van Erp, Louis Sullivan, and Grueby and Teco potteries. Also included in this auction is an important private Midwestern collection, which combines Art Deco masterpieces by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and René Lalique with elegant later works by designers such as Jean-Michel Frank and Diego Giacometti. The final chapter of the sale includes rare works by early modernists like Gerrit Rietveld through to postwar designs by George Nakashima and Claude Lalanne.
