Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction in New York on 9 November totaled $222,454,500, exceeding the pre-sale estimate of $214 million. The sale set five new artist records for Julie Mehretu, Jim Hodges, Cady Noland, Urs Fisher and Larry Rivers.
Andy Warhol's Coca-Cola  [Large Coca-Cola] led a particularly strong group of Pop Art when it soared above its high estimate to sell for $35,362,500. Eight bidders competed for the painting, which was the last of four paintings of individual Coca-Cola bottles executed by Warhol in 1961 and 1962, and the largest of the group. Along with Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein is recognized as a great master of Pop Art. Ice Cream Soda had been in the same collection since 1962 when it was purchased from Lichtenstein's gallery and on 9 November it sold for $14,082,500.
