Jean-Michel Basquiat's 1982 work Hannibal led the charge in the Contemporary Art Evening Auction, reaching £10.6 million, against the backdrop of a lively saleroom during Frieze week in London. Other star lots included Peter Doig's Grasshopper, which sold for £5.9 million, and Gerhard Richter's Garten, 1982, which after fierce bidding achieved £9 million, also more than double its high estimate. Preceding this was The Italian Sale, which saw captivating works offered by artists such as Mimmo Rotella, Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri, whose striking Rosso Plastica 5, 1962, sold for £4.7 million.
