For the first time, Sotheby’s Institute will run a three-day course in Mumbai, hosted at the prestigious Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Gateway of India. This specially designed course will culminate in an exclusive private view of the upcoming Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art Sale, the highlights of which will be on view in Mumbai prior to the London auction.
Sotheby’s Institute enjoys an enduring reputation as a world-leader at the forefront of arts education, and its alumni have gone on to hold positions as gallerists, curators, specialists and esteemed international collectors around the world. Mumbai is currently undergoing exciting developments in its art scene, with many galleries opening across the city and surrounding region. This is further highlighted by the upcoming opening of Sotheby’s Mumbai, a hugely significant moment for India-based clients and the international expansion of Sotheby’s.
With talks and seminars from Sotheby’s Institute course leaders, students will be encouraged to contribute to debate and discussions surrounding the global contemporary art market, in the context of economic, cultural and societal developments. Interactive panels will allow them to explore and engage a range of subjects, applying their newly acquired knowledge to their own areas of interest. Topics covered on the course include; art and value, the market for modern and contemporary Indian art and emerging art markets. To achieve this, the course will focus on real-world examples, and informative workshops that will equip participants in gathering knowledge and expertise in the field.
Course tutors Anna Moszynska, Consultant Lecturer, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Dr Iain Robertson, Head of Art Business, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, and Yamini Mehta, International Head of Department, Indian and Southeast Asian Art at Sotheby’s, will deliver a programme of classroom-based learning, alongside guided tours of museums, galleries and private collections throughout the city. Students will have the opportunity to tap in to the invaluable knowledge of these industry leaders and immerse themselves in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.
As well as three days of extensive access to Sotheby’s specialists and key figures in the Mumbai art world, the course will finish with an exclusive private cocktail reception to view highlights of the Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art exhibition, which coincides with the grand opening of Sotheby’s Mumbai. Works from this exhibition will go on sale in London on 18 October.
