Patek Philippe introduced  the novelty Ref 5160 in 2010 first in yellow gold then white gold and lastly pink gold in 2013. This model is based on Ref 5159 perpetual calendar with retrograde wristwatch but with a case entirely engraved by hand, including the lugs, bezel and hinged back, and a discreetly decorated hand-guillochéd center to its dial, making it a magnificent example of both the engraver and guillocheur’s arts.

To those who are more familiar with the classic simplicity shown in most Patek Philippe examples, this reference seems to exemplify a rather elaborated design in comparison. Nevertheless, it is actually inspired by a grand complication watch affectionately known by enthusiasts of the brand and horological history as “the Packard”. This remarkable timepiece was custom designed for the American industrialist James Ward Packard and was hailed the most complicated timepiece in the world at the time of its completion in 1927. This highly complicated pocket watch was offered with the floral engraving on its 18-karat gold case and the granulation on its bow.  Ref 5160 is undoubtedly a testimony of Patek Philippe’s love of fine handcrafted arts and the perpetuation of them in highly aesthetic ways.
