The Surrealist Art evening sale achieved a final total of £14,860,500. The auction’s top lot was led by Paul Delvaux’s Le Miroir, which achieved a new auction record for the artist, selling for £7.3 million. Further auction records were established for a work on paper by Francis Picabia and a sculpture by Man Ray.
Sotheby’s Surrealist Art Evening Sale includes a wonderful array of works of art by many of the key figures of the Surrealist movement. These include Le Miroir, a stunning oil by Paul Delvaux, wonderful gouaches by René Magritte, as well as Picabia’s revolutionary Dada composition Ventilateur, from circa 1918, whichis one of the most impressive examples of his work to be offered at auction in recent years.
