The sale of Fine Chinese Paintings fetched a total of HK$406 million / US$52 million which more than doubled its pre-sale high estimate (over HK$170 million / US$21.8 million*). The top lot of the sale, Zhang Daqian’s Spring Dawns upon the Colourful Hills, achieved HK$34.8 million / US$4.5 million (Estimate HK$3.8-5 million / US$490,000-640,000*), nearly seven times its high estimate.
There was also keen competition for a group of 23 paintings from Early 20th Century Art Scene in Beijing and Tianjin which achieved HK$37.8 million / US$4.8 million, far exceeding the high estimate of HK$12.8 million. Notable among this group was Jin Cheng’s Spring Scenery of Jiangnan, which sold for HK$7.8 million / US$1 million, more than tripling the high estimate.
This sale brings together a selection of works by leading modern Chinese artists such as Zhang Daqian, Lin Fengmian, Pu Ru and Lu Yanshao. Featuring alongside are several carefully assembled collections: “A North American Collection of Important Chinese Paintings”, “Calligraphy from the Late Qing Dynasty”, and a group of paintings from artists of the Northern school which offers a glimpse of the early 20th century Beijing art circle.
