LONDON – A constellation of art fairs and exhibitions takes place throughout the capital in mid-October, headlined by Frieze London and Frieze Masters. Frieze London hosts 160 dealers in a new tent by Universal Design Studio. There is a special focus on solo presentations, ranging from multimedia work by the Conceptual art pioneer Brian O’Doherty, jointly presented by New York galleries P! and Simone Subal; to a provocative installation by hot young artist collective Slavs and Tatars at Raster Warsaw. Reflecting a wider trend, organisers have introduced Live, a selection of experimental performance-based works staged throughout the fair.

Across Regent’s Park at Frieze Masters the atmosphere is more stately, but not stuffy. Visitors will find among the 120 galleries such diverse offerings as 17th-century Flemish flower paintings, Etruscan votive effigies, portraits by Francis Bacon and sculptures by Joseph Beuys.

In addition, Frieze has spawned a number of complementary fairs. The perennially chic Pavilion of Art and Design (PAD), capitalises on the lack of design at Frieze. For those seeking undiscovered talent, the Sunday Art Fair showcases young galleries in the cavernous Ambika P3 Gallery. For the most intrepid there is the Other Art Fair in the East End, exhibiting over 100 artists selected by a committee of artists. (Sunday Art Fair, 15–18 October; PAD, 15–19 October; Other Art Fair, 16–19 October).
