While most early races were decided by the first car to cross the finish line, the sport’s growing popularity and the availability of complicated timing devices encouraged new forms of competition, including hill climbs, sprints, rallies and endurance races. These events became the dominant form of postwar racing, where drivers raced not against each other, but against the clock. While we celebrate the drivers behind record-setting laps, it’s the stopwatch that cemented a champion’s place in history. Special forces need specialized equipment. Luxury watch companies, such as Rolex, Omega and Longines, have been commissioned throughout history to equip armed forces with timepieces that offer unique technical functions. The Army, for example, uses chronographs with telemeter and tachometer scales, while Navy watches incorporate time zone and diving features. Two Rolex timepieces in the Watches Online auction (18–25 June, Online) were custom ordered by the Special Reconnaissance Regiment of the British Armed Forces (SRR), which was established in 2005 to provide Her Majesty and the United Kingdom with heightened surveillance, particularly regarding counter-terrorism efforts. Here, discover more about what makes each of these military-issued watches so collectible.
When Adam Craniotes conceived RedBar Group in a midtown Manhattan bar in 2007, he had no idea it would one day have 40 chapters across four continents. A community-based organization that holds social events for watch lovers, Redbar today has 3,000 members and counting. “At RedBar everyone is on equal footing, regardless of the pieces they own or how large their bank accounts are,” Craniotes, a former copywriter now entirely devoted to RedBar, told Sotheby’s. “We measure the worth of collectors by the size of their passion.” Ahead, Craniotes shares more about RedBar, his personal collection and the pieces he is coveting from Sotheby’s Important Watches auction (24 May, New York).
