Camille Pissarro traveled with his son Félix to Belgium in July 1894. The day after arriving in Belgium, the President of France, Sadi Carnot, was assasinated by the Italian anarchist Santo Jeronimo Caserio. Given the elder Pissarro's political sympathies, he elected to extend his one week stay in Belgium to almost four months, including a week in Brussels.

The present work likely depicts a market in front of the Church of St. Catherine, located a short walk from Pissarro's lodgings in Brussels at the Hôtel du Grand Mirroir. This work appears to be unique in his oeuvre.
